West African Drumming Workshop June 1 & 2, 2024

Leo Brooks, Instructor

At an early age, Leo Brooks was heavily influenced by one of the great drummers of our time: Animal from the Muppet Show. He still strives to share that zeal for rhythm and percussion everywhere he goes.

Born in Calgary, Leo worked as a travelling music teacher in the Ottawa/Gatineau region for nearly 20 years, where he enriched the musical lives of thousands of children through his interactive classes, drum building workshops and rhythm circles.

In 2019 Leo returned to his native Alberta to pursue a Master’s degree. His resulting research project in music education technology earned him the 2023 Governor General’s Gold Medal at the University of Lethbridge, the highest academic honour awarded by the institution.

Leo currently lives in Lethbridge and is the founder of Whacky Wizards Music Inc. – an online company dedicated to making music in the classroom fun.

Percussion Education Workshop (PEW)

Westwinds Music Society is thrilled to offer a FREE Percussion Education Workshop for Westwinds members AND non members, with our very skilled team of percussion educators – Celene Yohemas and Nia Devetzis. Our goal is to offer an opportunity to learn how to play the various instruments in the percussion section, hoping that this helps to bolster Adult Community Ensembles in the Calgary area, but also to find some budding percussionists to add to all of our Westwinds Concert Bands.

Dates:  Saturday, September 30 & Sunday, October 1

Times:  10:00 am - 5:00 pm both days

Location:  William Aberhart High School – 3009 Morley Trail NW

Instructors:  Celene Yohemas & Nia Devetzis

 To Be Eligible, you must:

  • register through the Westwinds website

  • be 18 years of age or older

  • be a confident music reader

  • bring a pair of drumsticks

Also:

  • if you have access to a practice pad, please bring it

  • please bring a lunch, pencil, water bottle

Once the workshop is finished, Westwinds plans to continue offering a FREE percussion techniques course for at least the fall Semester (Oct-Dec) to continue to hone your percussion skills.  This will be available for anyone who becomes a Westwinds member and registers and regularly attends any of our Concert Bands for the purpose of playing percussion.  Westwinds reserves the right to vet these participants.
