Music Theory 2 - Notation and Pitch

Mondays 8:15-9:15 pm, March 1-22, April 5 & 12 (6 weeks)

$50 Course Fee

Jane McLauchlin

This course will be a continuation of Music Theory 1 and assumes a basic understanding of note naming on the staff, accidentals, tones and semi-tones (whole and half steps) along with an understanding of the chromatic scale. We will start with a review of how to build Major Scales, followed by Key signatures and the use of the Circle of Keys, then delve into Minor Scales, Pentatonic and Whole Tone scales.  If there is time, we will take a look a intervals.  Our goal is comprehension – it’s more important to have an understanding of the concepts we are talking about than to move on to the next thing.  Each week you’ll be provided with an opportunity to practice the latest concepts through an optional assignment.

If you would like to take this course without having taken Music Theory 1, please contact Jane so together we can ensure you have the correct theoretical knowledge to allow you to succeed.

Recommended for anyone who wants further understanding of scales and key signatures AND who have taken Music Theory 1 or have a basic knowledge of tones, semitones, accidentals and the chromatic scale.

Some testimonials from past participants in Music Theory 2:

“I've been taking the theory class (on the 2nd one now) and I would suggest it to anyone who wants to learn all about how to read music! The course goes in depth, but all questions are answered, and Jane makes sure everyone understands before we move on......”
